Judiciary Calls on Claimants to Collect Over Shs54bn in Unclaimed Bail
Permanent Secretary Pius Bigirimana urges individuals with unclaimed bail payments to submit claims as a committee is established to expedite refunds.

The Judiciary of Uganda has urged individuals who made bail payments to come forward and claim refunds, following concerns raised by Members of Parliament on the Public Accounts Committee (Central Government) that over Shs54 billion in bail and security deposits remains unclaimed.

Pius Bigirimana, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Judiciary, told PAC (Central) on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, that a dedicated committee has been established to ensure timely reimbursement of these funds.

“A committee has been established to ensure that these monies are refunded to their rightful owners,” Bigirimana said.

Individuals seeking refunds must provide relevant documentation, including the original bail bond form, receipt issued by the court, and URA acknowledgement receipt where applicable.

Sarah Langa, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, clarified that refunds are applicable only for cases that have been concluded or where the state has lost interest, and provided the individual has not absconded or jumped bail.

The amount of unclaimed bail has grown substantially over the years. Previous reports indicated that as of June 30, 2021, the balance stood at Shs26 billion, highlighting the urgency for claimants to initiate the refund process.

The Judiciary is encouraging all eligible individuals to act promptly to recover their deposits.
